Leadership and communication about safety culture

Johnson & Johnson headquarters in New Brunswick, United States, with the company’s name at the entrance

In July 2019, I began my work with Johnson & Johnson’s Brazilian operation. The work brought together leadership training in safety culture and risk perception, as well as communication support through campaigns and games.

The responsibility of those who guide the work

I led training for the leadership team in safety culture and risk perception. These topics help examine the responsibility of people whose decisions affect the work of others.

Leaders communicate priorities when they guide an activity, set a deadline, or talk with the team. For me, developing their understanding of safety requires attention to these choices. The way they perceive risks and address the subject contributes to the conditions in which people work.

This responsibility deserves clarity. Leaders need to understand the care they expect from their teams and the influence of their own decisions on that care.

Campaigns and games to talk about safety

I also supported safety communication through campaigns and games. These resources offer other ways to present the topic and invite people to take part in the discussion.

Language deserves as much attention as content. A message needs to be understood by its recipients, and the chosen resource should help connect the topic with work situations. This is the care I consider important when developing safety communication.
