Mentoring for Leaders

Difficult conversations, competing priorities, and signs of risk require a response from the leader. Mentoring provides individual or group support to examine these situations and work on applying the learning in daily practice.

Discuss mentoring

In the sessions, leaders can examine how they listen to people, assess a situation in the field, and uphold commitments when pressure arises. The issues participants bring guide what will be discussed and applied between conversations.

Leaders and decisions we can work with

Mentoring can serve executive leaders, operations managers, EHS or SSMA professionals, and frontline leaders. These are people who directly influence teams, priorities, and resources.

It is especially useful when a leader needs to:

  • Strengthen presence and improve the quality of conversations in the field;
  • Handle resistance, pressure for results, or competing priorities;
  • Improve responses to risk signals and bad news;
  • Develop trust and responsibility within the team;
  • Turn intention into consistent practices;
  • Prepare for a new role or expand their influence within the organization.

How sessions are conducted

The process begins by defining the objective and the challenges to address. Sessions combine reflection, analysis of specific situations, and commitments to apply learning between conversations.

With a group of leaders, mentoring can also create a common language. It can support the exchange of experiences across areas or sites. Format, duration, and frequency depend on the context.

The six attributes of a leader

Leadership work considers six practical attributes:

  1. Build trust.
  2. Encourage innovative thinking.
  3. Work as a team.
  4. Train the team.
  5. Recognize and reward.
  6. Be in the field.

These attributes are addressed through the decisions, conversations, and responsibilities of the leader. They do not function as an abstract list of competencies.

Connections with other areas of work

Mentoring can be a project in its own right or support an assessment, a cultural transformation strategy, or a leadership development program.
