Ethanol plant with silos, tanks, and processing structures

Bioenergy

Safety culture in biofuel production and energy generation from biomass, with attention to industrial routines and work carried out on equipment at the sites.

What changes between production and the off-season

A bioenergy site brings together receiving, processing, storage, and energy generation. Its pace may follow the supply of raw materials, but safety decisions continue during maintenance, shutdowns, and preparation for a new cycle.

During these transitions, in-house and contractor teams share areas and equipment under conditions different from their usual ones. The quality of planning and communication between production, maintenance, and safety becomes important: what does each team know about the activities taking place around it?

We also need to understand how leaders handle the pressures of the production period. Plant availability, deadlines, and targets are part of the context in which people make decisions. Making these relationships visible helps define priorities for cultural transformation.

Consider the site throughout the cycle

The work may combine a culture assessment, an evaluation of serious and fatal accident prevention, and leadership development. The scope considers differences between regular operations, planned shutdowns, and unplanned work on equipment.

The implementation of tools needs to be followed up with the teams using them. This follow-up helps identify barriers, clarify responsibilities between functions and companies, and bring needed adjustments in planning and routines to management’s attention.
