Safety Culture Assessment

When indicators do not explain what people experience at work, an assessment helps investigate the difference. We gather information from the organization, listen to teams, and observe routines to understand the safety culture and set priorities with leadership.

When an assessment is needed

  • Before defining a strategy or a cultural transformation program.
  • When areas, sites, or leadership levels have very different perceptions.
  • When indicators do not explain the signs observed in operations.
  • When the organization needs to establish priorities and a baseline for tracking progress.
  • During changes in leadership, the integration of operations, or a review of safety strategy.

How we build an understanding

The assessment is designed around the context, scope, and decisions the organization needs to make. To compare different sources, the work may combine:

  • Analysis of existing information, indicators, and practices;
  • Interviews and listening to people at different levels of the organization;
  • Observation of routines, rituals, and work situations;
  • Analysis of perceptions of leadership, responsibility, trust, and responses to risk;
  • Comparisons across areas, sites, or groups, where this analysis is relevant;
  • An executive summary with findings, priorities, and recommendations.

The Bradley and Hudson curves may be used as maturity references, without replacing an understanding of the specific organization.

What to do with the findings

By comparing findings, leaders can identify patterns across areas and issues that need attention at a particular site or within a group. This discussion helps them choose priorities based on the conditions found.

We work with the organization to define who participates, how findings will be presented, and what the next steps will be. The format depends on the context, and the time needed for transformation varies across organizations.

Proven experience

Over 500 Safety Culture Assessments have been conducted.

The Projects page documents assessments and work related to safety culture at organizations such as Coca-Cola, Bayer, InterCement, and CESP. Each project had its own context and scope.
