At Citrosuco, I contributed as a senior consultant to work that began in March 2018, covering operations in Brazil and Belgium. I participated in developing Citrosuco Brasil’s strategic safety plan and implementing the safety culture transformation program.
Give shape to the direction set in planning
The plan aimed to support cultural transformation and improve safety performance. The work included implementing the event reporting program, golden rules, and a progressive motivation program.
Each tool has a function. Reporting allows events to become known; golden rules establish safety reference points. My concern with tools of this kind is the understanding of those who use them: what is asked of people needs to be clear to them.
Prepare people to use the safety diary
We trained the Brazilian safety team to use the diary.
A diary needs to make sense to the person who will work with it. This understanding deserves attention during implementation because it is the person who puts the tool to use within the responsibilities they hold in the organization.
Develop knowledge about work and its risks
We also delivered training in safety culture, incident investigation, safety auditing, risk perception, work authorization, and safety behavior observation.
Investigating an event, authorizing work, and observing an activity each require their own understanding. Providing training on these topics recognizes the responsibility of the people who need to address them within the organization.
