Training and support for the operations team

I began working with CHS in January 2018, alongside its Brazilian operations. The work provided two forms of support for the operations team: annual safety meetings and coaching in the use of the safety diary.

Leadership, risk perception, and communication

I led the Annual Safety Workshop for two years with the Brazilian operations team. We worked on safety leadership, risk perception, and communication.

These topics meet in the workplace. Perceiving a risk situation requires attention; communicating what has been perceived also requires preparation. Leaders contribute through how they receive this communication and guide the team.

When I devote training to these topics, I consider each person’s responsibility in the conversation important. A risk perceived by someone needs space to be addressed. Preparing the team to talk about safety is part of this care.

Support the use of the diary

For six months, I coached the Brazilian operations team in the use of the safety diary. This support gave the tool its own place within the work with CHS.

Providing a tool brings a responsibility toward the people who will use it. They need to understand its purpose and what is expected from its use. I see ongoing support as an opportunity to give attention to this understanding, respecting the time people need to learn. At CHS, the diary was the focus of this ongoing work with the operations team.
