In January 2020, I began working with CESP in its Brazilian operations. As a senior consultant, I contributed to the development of a strategic safety plan focused on cultural transformation and improved safety performance.
The work included the culture assessment in Brazilian operations and support for establishing golden rules and a progressive motivation program.
Examine the culture and plan the change
I conducted CESP’s safety culture assessment. Examining culture requires attention to how safety is understood within the organization. A company may have well-defined guidance and still need to understand how the people doing the work interpret it.
My contribution to strategic planning focused on transforming this culture. I consider it important for a plan to help a company decide where to devote effort and what it needs to develop. When the direction is clear, leaders have a reference point for taking on the commitments required by the plan.
Golden rules and progressive motivation
I also supported the establishment of safety golden rules and the progressive motivation program. A rule needs to make sense to those responsible for following it and those who guide its application.
Care lies in this clarity. People need to understand what is expected of them, and management needs to be consistent in the guidance it offers and the behaviors it encourages.
