Competencies and governance to implement behavior-based safety

We have been working with ANDRITZ in Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil, where the work covers two business units. The project to implement BBS, or Behavior-Based Safety, began in 2025 and continues to develop in 2026.

Start with leadership and governance

We chose to begin by building leadership competencies and implementing safety governance. These are the program’s first two areas of work. As we do this, we learn about the organizational context and gather the understanding needed to decide how to introduce behavioral tools.

A tool will be used by people, within the conditions of that organization. Preparing leaders and developing governance are therefore also opportunities to learn about the context in which we are working. This learning needs to inform the implementation design.

For me, this is a responsibility of mentoring. We have to adapt programs to the circumstances we find and develop an approach to implementation that can work there. At ANDRITZ, this care accompanies our work in all three countries.

Introduce the tools and bring the program into daily work

The third area of work is the implementation of behavioral tools. We reach this stage with the knowledge built while developing competencies and governance. That knowledge guides how we apply the tools within the organization.

The next area of work is putting the behavioral program into operation. The work then includes its execution, so that what has been developed becomes part of practice. Mentoring supports this transition: from preparing leaders and governance to using the tools in daily work.

Preparation guides the use of tools

Leadership competencies and safety governance come before the implementation of behavioral tools.

Leadership competencies and governance prepare the way for introducing behavioral tools and applying them in daily work. The diagram does not represent the duration or completion of these areas of work.

The connections show the logic of BBS implementation.

Bring critical risks into the behavioral approach

The program is also incorporating its first criteria related to the prevention of serious and fatal accidents. We are bringing the behavioral approach to activities involving critical risks and focusing inspections on them.

This development broadens attention to the severity of the risks involved in activities. Preventing events with serious or fatal consequences is beginning to guide both the behavioral approach and the focus of inspections. This area of work continues to develop alongside program implementation.
