I began working with InterCement in October 2019, on work that reached Brazil, Mozambique, South Africa, and Egypt. As a senior consultant, I contributed to strategic planning and supported the safety culture transformation program.
Understand performance to guide decisions
We conducted an in-depth analysis of the main leading and lagging safety indicators. Lagging indicators allow us to examine events and their consequences; leading indicators help monitor prevention efforts.
When working with indicators, I consider it important to ask what they allow us to understand and what still needs to be examined. This attention is part of the responsibility of planning. The purpose of supporting cultural transformation at InterCement was to improve safety performance.
Examine the culture at Brazilian sites
We conducted the Safety Culture Assessment at all sites in Brazil. This assessment added an examination of culture to the work with indicators and planning.
A management tool is used by people with their own understanding and experiences. That is why the way safety is understood within the organization deserves attention. The assessment provides space to examine this dimension of work.
Prepare those who care for safety
I coached the Brazilian Safety, Health, and Environment team across the company’s operations. We also trained safety teams in accident investigation and safety leadership.
Investigating an event and guiding people are responsibilities that require preparation. At InterCement, training and ongoing support were part of the support for cultural transformation, with attention to the professionals who held these responsibilities within the organization.
