When we understand that safety culture is not developed only with excellent training models, including the learning gaps, we need a reference, a protagonist, or rather a trailblazer, someone who will become the multiplier, the inspirer, the spokesperson, the influencer, the example-setter, and who will practically translate the values and beliefs into the team’s daily routine, pointing the way for everything they do.
Leaders define culture, Leaders define the safety performance, that is why is not a cliché to say that the word convinces, though the example drags entire teams.
Being with leaders has always been the top priority on my agenda. I knew the need to accompany them for their development, and over the years, this brought me great learning. In the early stages of my career, I accompanied Managers, then Directors and Vice Presidents. I was clear that safety was not something that was inherently a value for them, or even in the popular language, it wasn’t in their DNA. That is where I came in and played my role as a facilitator, always presenting facts, data, needs, sharing concerns and risks.
I have learned how to build relationships for the sake of care, and with that I was able to realize what are the fundamental attributes to lead in safety, presenting the summits or what are the main Everests of the Leader when it comes to safety.
