Diagnosis is a process of profound active listening
Diagnosis is a process of profound active listening, in each step, employees of all levels and departments are listened to really understand what they think, feel and do about safety.
What is it?
The diagnosis of perception of the culture maturity is a tool based in globally known methodologies and that allow the classification of the maturity stages of a Safety Culture. Among the most practiced models by the market are the Bradley Curve (Dupont) and Hudson Curve (Hearts and Minds).
Why should it be performed?
By understanding the culture’s functioning is possible to create stimuli and direct tools, so that associated with the rituals, symbols, heroes and communication, may strengthen the Safety Culture, so that it becomes a value and influences the lives of our employees in an integral way.
The main benefits of a Safety Culture diagnosis:
- Tells us where we are and points where we should go;
- Identification of the vulnerabilities of the safety management;
- Assessment of behavioral risks;
- Inputs for the development of an operational, tactical and strategic agenda;
- Alignment with the best practices in the market;
- Involvement of the organization;
- Developing of a humanized perspective;
- It is a guide about “What” and “How” to develop the Culture maturity and as consequence safe and healthy behaviors.
What can we identify when we perform a diagnosis?
- Beliefs (deep-rooted truths);
- Values (non-negotiable);
- Differences between what is practiced, what is understood and what is believed to be the safer way to do things;
- Rituals (How safety is experienced within the organization);
- How safety is printed in the company’s DNA;
- Symbols (Visible safety in infrastructure, communication, machine conditions, equipment, and tools.);
- How we understand and practice safety;
- How are our results in safety, and how do we challenge our safety performance?
Who participates, and who executes?
For a representative diagnosis, it is recommended to listen from 70 to 90% of the people who work in the organization and include fixed third parties. It is important that the organization has diagnosis made for a third-party company, this ensures independence in assessments. This does not prevent the company from conducting self-assessments to track improvements during the recommended implementations. The Safety team of the organization can lead the diagnosis.
When to conduct a Safety Culture Diagnosis?
It is recommended conducting this diagnosis annually. If you choose a longer period, it is important not to exceed 3 years.
Where to conduct it?
For a more consistent result and to define a strategic work plan, it is important for the scope of the diagnosis to encompass the entire organization: Administrative, Industrial, Distribution, Commercial, and any other areas the company may have.
How does it work?
Utilization of qualitative assessment methods such as individual interviews, focus groups, field approaches, online or written surveys, as well as visits to units to identify and engage with the visible artifacts that constitute the organization’s culture, be they rituals, symbols, understanding communication practices, and identifying the organization’s heroes. Some significant documents for safety management are also evaluated.
For a better understanding how to carry out the culture diagnosis, let’s separate it into 5 steps:
- Planning;
- Implementation;
- Analysis;
- Delivery of the report and presentation of the results;
- Preparation of the action plan.
